Background [edit]
"Just Requite Me a Reason" features Nate Ruess from the American band Fun. Originally, it was just a song writing session but Pink realized that she needed someone else to sing the song with her because she thought that information technology was more of a conversation than a ane perspective vocal. She asked Ruess to sing the song with her equally a duet.[v]
Pinkish said "I was like, 'no, this is a story, this is a conversation this song' - information technology needs the other perspective whether it'due south a guy and a girl, or 2 girls or two guys. 'I came in and tried to convince him that this was how the conversation was going to become and information technology was interesting you know, he was like 'I'll just practise the demo cos I don't know about duets' and I totally tricked him into doing it, and I am so glad I was able to. 'I think now he's very happy that he did information technology, I recollect it's a beautiful song and I'k really, actually proud of it.[6]
Nate Ruess told MTV News: "Writing the song was a whole unlike learning feel and was actually fueled by the fact that Alecia [Pinkish's real proper noun is Alecia Moore] is so strong and contained and so very much herself. At the end of the day it'southward so hard to argue confronting her because what she does is always so nifty.[6]
The song is about the want to hold on to a relationship even when it appears to exist breaking downward.[one]
Composition [edit]
"Just Give Me a Reason" is a pop ballad[seven] written by both artists and produced by Jeff Bhasker, who was besides the lead producer for Some Nights, the 2nd album from Ruess' ring, fun. "Just Give Me a Reason" starts off with a unproblematic melody played on the piano, equally Pink starts to sing the showtime stanza and chorus, the latter of which introduces drum machines and bass. The second stanza is then sung by Ruess, and the rest of the vocal is sung as a duet. The song ends with a piano solo, like to the intro. Information technology has a elapsing of iv minutes and ii seconds.[eight]
Co-ordinate to the canvass music published on Musicnotes.com, "Simply Give Me a Reason" is written in the key of Chiliad major with a moderate tempo of 95 beats per minute. Pink and Ruess' vocals span two octaves in the vocal, from G3 to G5. The verses of the song follow the chord progression G I C Em I C I K, the chorus is G I D7/F# I Em I Bm D7, while the prechorus, the intro, and the outro follow the progression of Em A/C# I D I repeated iii times before C 1000/B I Am, and with a variation into the second chorus.[nine]
Critical reception [edit]
The vocal received acclamation from contemporary critics. Jody Rosen from Rolling Stone referred positively to "Simply Give Me a Reason" as the all-time track within the album, "in which Pinkish dials back the drama, letting the tune and sentiments do their work".[10] Sharing the same opinion, Amy Sciaretto from PopCrush said she liked the "soft" side of Pinkish and that she and Nate Ruess "fit similar a jigsaw puzzle, a lovely yin and yang."[11] Bill Lamb from About.com said: "The genius backside 'Only Give Me a Reason' is that it is a powerful, well written song that is immune to shine by a simple, spare Jeff Bhasker product and straightforward vocals from Pink and Nate Ruess of the group Fun. The song lays out the emotions backside a wish for reconciliation in a relationship merely doesn't provide easy answers. The unproblematic piano based production ensures that every give-and-take is clear and the emotional tone of the voices is heard."[12]
Lewis Corner from Digital Spy said: "As her latest single 'Just Give Me a Reason' demonstrates, Pink isn't afraid to band with pop'southward current flavour - and in this case it's Fun.'due south Nate Ruess. "I let yous see the parts of me/ That weren't all that pretty/ And with every touch y'all fixed them," Pink reveals over a folksy piano line, before she bursts into a heart-warbling chorus. The terminal result may repeat fun.'due south own anthemic hits, but Pinkish never fails to make a song her ain, even when sharing the spotlight."[7] MusicOMH said that "Pink'south other side – the impassioned songwriter – is showcased on Try, which demonstrates that she has a vocalisation that not enough people requite her credit for. Like territory is trodden in Just Give Me a Reason, a duet with fun.'s lead singer Nate Ruess (which sounds more like a fun. song than a Pink vocal, funnily enough), but it'south these moments that show Pink at her near formulaic."[13]
Common Sense Media (CSM) said, "Pink, vocalizer from ring fun. team up in sweet dearest melody."[14] Billboard also gave a positive review of the song saying this duet with the band's lead vocaliser Nate Ruess (produced by "We Are Young" helmer Jeff Bhasker) would fit right at home on "Some Nights": "Although it's a picayune jarring to hear Pink'southward raw, live vocals paired with Ruess' Automobile-Tune, information technology's ultimately a less-schmaltzy version of those male/female duets found at the end credits of every 80s film."[15] HitFix said One of the highlights is her duet with fun.'s Nate Ruess, who co-wrote "Just Give Me a Reason".[16]
